THE TRAVELER’S GIFT: Seven Decisions That Determine Personal Success
By: Andy Andrews
Quote: “Our very lives are fashioned by choice. First we make choices. Then our choices make us.”
“The Traveler’s Gift” is a story following the failed business executive David Ponder as he takes a journey of discovery and finds the seven decisions that determine personal success.
While I was watching a workshop video from the Six Figure Mentors training program, John (JJ) Jackson, one of the mentoring leaders, said this book “rocked my world”, and it “continues to rock my world to this day”. He elaborates using the first decision as an example, and how just that one decision had such a positive impact on his life. Based on that recommendation, I purchased the book.
The Traveler’s Gift is a modern day parable in the same style as “The Celestine Prophecy”, or “The Five People You Meet In Heaven”.
David Ponder looses his job and his life hits rock bottom. He has lost all hope and feels a sense of utter futility, unable to find a path out of his predicament. However, it is exactly when he is at his lowest, and all hope is lost, that he begins the journey through which he learns the seven decisions he must make for his success and ultimate redemption.
The story is an easy read, and you may find the story is a little bit simplistic, however, the story is an excellent vehicle for the introduction of each of the decisions. I found myself trying to guess what each decision would be based on his conversations with other characters and the scenarios in which they were living that David encounters on each leg of his journey.
Every chapter that introduces a “decision for success” ends with a few pages that really detail exactly what that decision involves. They are written in the form of a personal mantra, something that is suggested be read aloud twice daily until it is committed to your heart. Once committed to your heart, you will apply each decision for success to your life, live each one by example, and share it with others.
At the end of the book, there is a reader’s guide created to facilitate a better understanding of the life changing principles. These are basically a series of questions designed to encourage you think a little more in depth about the book. To me, these were little more than a series of questions that a high school teacher might ask their class when setting an assignment after reading the book, and as such, I didn’t find the reader’s guide of any additional value to me.
As with most self improvement books, I believe you can gain a little from just reading them cover to cover, but that is like learning through osmosis, a kind of unconscious assimilation of what you read. However, it is not until you really study the text, put the ideas into practice and share or teach those concepts that you really begin to understand and gain the most.
I must admit that “The Traveler’s Gift” hasn’t yet rocked my world, but then I have so far only read the book. It is now time for me to take action, commit the decisions to heart, and put them into practice. Maybe then it will rock my world.
Each of the decisions is a fundamental truth. I see these truths again and again, in different contexts and formats, not just books, but videos, podcasts, blog posts and even movies. I have already seen some of the principles expressed in this book appear in the book I am now reading, and in many of the training videos and material I am studying. Each time I come across these fundamental truths, they are reinforced. It is now time for me to take action.
Is it time for you to take action? Whether you are discovering the seven decisions for success for the first time, or reinforcing the fundamental truths you already know, read “The Traveler’s Gift“.
